Vorad Fils Drops 'Aston Dilla' as Peon

Seekae’s John Hassell released his debut solo album on Feral Media last year – ‘The Warmest Static’, released under the VORAD FILS name. This month sees the release of another solo album, dropped under an entirely different alias – PEON. Hassell has been recording and collaborating as PEON as part of Sydney’s ONEOFOUR COLLECTIVE – a group of local producers who come together regularly to share ideas, perform and release a series of exquisite mixtapes (download for free at oneofour.net).

PEON’s ‘Aston Dilla’ is a collection of 16 tracks that pushes Hassell’s sound in a clear trajectory towards a land inhabited by screwed hip hop vocals, crooked beats and sumptuous electronica. And both fans and haters of Beyonce and Christina Aguilera are sure to find common ground in PEON’s covers of ‘Say My Name’ and ‘Can’t Hold Us Down’.

And perhaps best of all, ‘Aston Dilla’ is available as a free download.

Gentleforce & Underlapper collaborate on UnderForce Mixtape

Underlapper and Gentleforce have gotten together to create a mixtape in the lead up to Underlapper’s new album Softly Harboured due for release early 2011. Here is what Greg Stone from Underlapper had to say about the mix:

This mix is somewhat of a taster for the forthcoming Underlapper album Softly Harboured which is set for release in the coming months. The idea of making an eclectic mix has always interested me and in fact the first two tracks were actually the starting point many years ago. A couple of months ago I finally decided to pursue the idea further and began to compile more tracks which not only fit together but also represented some of the artists and genres that have either directly or indirectly influenced me recently. In addition to this the mix also features a couple of tracks from the new Underlapper album as well as our contribution to the recent Strain of Origin release by Feral Media and loFly records. Once the tracks were compiled I approached a very close friend of the band Eli Murray (aka Gentleforce) who has a penchant for mixing a wide range of styles in his DJ sets and has always been a great source of inspiration over the years. I consider this mix to be the next instalment in what will hopefully be many more collaborations between Underlapper and Gentleforce.

Listen or download the mix below and stay tuned for more news on the release of Underlapper’s new album!

Free Download – Feral Media vs LoFly – 16 Track Remix Album

The latest release from FERAL MEDIA is ‘The Strain Of Origin’ – a unique and exclusive collaboration between FERAL MEDIA and Brisbane’s LOFLY label.

The 16-track remix album is the musical equivalent of an interstate swinger’s party, gathering a bunch of artists from each label’s roster and having them remix a track by an artist from the other label. The line-up includes Feral Media artists VORAD FILS, II, CLEPTOCLECTICS, UNDERLAPPER, AFXJIM, COMATONE, BROKEN CHIP and ALPEN taking on lofly artists MR MAPS, JOEL EDMONDSON, TOY BALLOON, AHEADPHONEHOME, RESTREAM, RE:ENACTMENT and SUBSEA.

The initial two week deadline meant the remixes were raw and spontaneous. The result is an eclectic mix of musical styles that showcases burgeoning artists from the Australian underground music scene. Curated by Danny Jumpertz, Greg Stone and Andrew White, mastered by G L Seiler (COMATONE) and with artwork by Stuart Buchanan, ‘The Strain of Origin’ album is a celebration of the depth and originality of Australian music, and is being made available by the labels as a FREE download.

ABOUT FERAL MEDIA: Formed by Danny Jumpertz in 2000, Feral Media is an artist-run record label based in Sydney. Feral Media pride themselves on releasing interesting, new Australian music in beautiful and often limited edition packages. Now into their 10th year and with 60 releases under their belt, Feral Media continues to play a pivotal role in the growing experimental music scene in Australia.

ABOUT LOFLY: lofly Recordings is a Brisbane record label with a roster of eight bands, specialising in esoteric and progressive indie and electronic music. For the last three years, lofly has spent their days curating one of Australias premier DIY warehouse nights “hangar”, as well as sporadically releasing records the significance or otherwise of which they barely understand. The five honchos through band membership, remixing, production and promotion have formed an integral part of the promising Brisbane band and DIY club tornado currently brewing.

Textile Audio Releases 'The Pomegranate EP'

Feral Media is pleased to announce the release of ‘The Pomegranate EP’ from TEXTILE AUDIO – the solo project for operatic mezzo soprano and electronic musician Eve Klein.

Working with scores, field recordings, and operatic-pop vocals, Textile Audio weaves rich melodic soundscapes and textures that are unashamedly romantic.

Her debut EP for Feral Media includes material from her forthcoming ‘electronica opera’, titled “The Pomegranate Cycle”. Fusing opera, ambient electronica and post-classical composition, the work is loosely based around the myth of Persephone; and is premiering at the Brisbane Festival as part of ‘Under The Radar’.

The EP also includes a new remix by Sydney’s GENTLEFORCE, whose recent contribution to Feral Media’s POWWOW series (‘Sacred Spaces’) translated into an upcoming appearance on a compilation CD from the renowned magazine, The Wire.

The EP is available on both digital and limited CD formats, with cover artwork by Textile Audio. Purchase now at feralmedia.bandcamp.com.

Vorad Fils Lands No.2 Spot in 'Who The Hell' Best of 2010 (So Far)

We’re only 50% of the way through the year, but that hasn’t stopped Australian blog ‘Who The Bloody Hell Are They?’ putting together their ‘Best Of 2010 (So Far)’ list. And we’re delighted to see Feral Media’s VORAD FILS grabbing the No.2 spot ahead of critically lauded albums by other Australia artists PVT (aka PIVOT) and PARADES. Here’s what they had to say:

“This is solo project of John Hassell from Seekae. I love Seekae, and a lot of the stuff I love about Seekae is retained here, yet Hassell feels joyously free from the icy aesthetic that defines his main band’s music. As a result, we get tracks like ‘Lioness,’ which are no less technically impressive but far warmer and inviting. It’s the most immediate thing on there, but not even the best. Delve deeper if you enjoy.”
