marcus whale

The latest instalment in our ongoing Virtual Mixtape series with whothehell.net comes from Sydney musician Marcus Whale (Collarbones/Black Vanilla).

Marcus selected Scott Walker as the theme for his mixtape guiding us through his intriguing solo career, from the lush orchestral ballads of the late 60’s, through to the eccentric explorations of his more recent work.

Virtual Mixtape #1 – Jonathan Boulet

WhoTheHell2

We have teamed up with the awesome peeps from whothehell.net to bring you Virtual Mixtape, a new feature series where we ask musicians to create a mixtape based on a genre, artist or theme which they are passionate about but not necessarily associated with.

The series also features illustration from Melbourne-based artist Lucy Roleff who not only created the wonderful series artwork pictured above but is also providing an illustration of all the musicians involved (see the Jono Boulet illustration below).

The first instalment comes from Jonathan Boulet who takes us on a journey through sludge rock, hardcore, post punk and all things heavy.

Check out the mixtape over on whothehell.net here and stay tuned for the next instalment.

POWER MOVES remixes Spartak

power moves

The lovely folk at Who The Hell have just premiered the POWER MOVES remix of Spartak’s track Nightshift stating the “remix emphasises Buckett’s penchant for loops and abstraction – not to mention footwork. It’s a frightening snippet of mutated vocals and clattering snares; a very different animal to the original track”.
Listen to the remix and read the full article at the Who The Hell website here

Nightshift is taken from Spartak’s recent Five Points EP, and the remix comes from a special edition release of the EP which includes remixes from Andrew Pekler, Scissor Lock and Gatherer as well as a limited edition T-shirt.
Grab the special edition of the EP via the Spartak bandcamp page here

Vorad Fils Lands No.2 Spot in 'Who The Hell' Best of 2010 (So Far)

We’re only 50% of the way through the year, but that hasn’t stopped Australian blog ‘Who The Bloody Hell Are They?’ putting together their ‘Best Of 2010 (So Far)’ list. And we’re delighted to see Feral Media’s VORAD FILS grabbing the No.2 spot ahead of critically lauded albums by other Australia artists PVT (aka PIVOT) and PARADES. Here’s what they had to say:

“This is solo project of John Hassell from Seekae. I love Seekae, and a lot of the stuff I love about Seekae is retained here, yet Hassell feels joyously free from the icy aesthetic that defines his main band’s music. As a result, we get tracks like ‘Lioness,’ which are no less technically impressive but far warmer and inviting. It’s the most immediate thing on there, but not even the best. Delve deeper if you enjoy.”
