Latest Feral News

micro flora

It’s been a wee while since our last update, so here’s a wrap up of all recent Feral-related news.

Aside from a new EP from label founder Danny Jumpertz, and a collection of remixes from Underlapper, there have also been some notable releases from other Feral artists.

The unmistakable 0point1 dropped an amazing new album called micro-flora (pictured above) via his bandcamp site, and word has it he is already working on a follow-up.

Canberra artist Reuben Ingall has followed his wonderful Microclimates album from last year with another beguiling collection for new label Tandem Tapes. The album is a split release with Indonesian artist Logic Lost and once again finds Reuben in top form. Head to the Tandem Tapes bandcamp site here to listen.

We have also been busy with the Virtual Mixtape series in collaboration with the fine folks at whothehell.net. Recent contributors have included Dro Carey, Corin, and Lucy Roleff. Keep an eye on the whothehell.net site for future instalments.

And finally, in new FM music news we will be releasing an EP from Canberra outfit Cracked Actor whose album, Iconoclast, was one of favourites from last year. Stay tuned for more details on the EP, and in the meantime check out Duo, a collection of stripped back reworkings from members Sebastian Field and Matt Lustri.

0point1 releases debut album Clean Dirt

clean dirt

We are extremely proud to present Clean Dirt, the debut full-length from 0point1 aka Melbourne-based artist Bob Streckfuss.

Ever since we became aware of Bob’s work we knew this album was going to be special, and now that it’s finally here we are certainly not disappointed. The album follows on from his 17 minute epic The Dance of Mechanical Birds which provided an insight into his restless, creative world.

Clean Dirt is a work of startling beauty and intricate composition merging elements of dream pop and found sound electronica with complex rhythms and ethereal vocals.
The intricate manipulation of acoustic sources reveals a dichotomy between the organic and synthetic elements giving the music a frenetic, endearing quality.
Brimming with tireless creativity and a seemingly endless pool of ideas, the album is an exciting statement from a unique new voice amongst the current musical landscape.

Clean Dirt is available digitally and as a limited edition printed USB which contains bonus tracks and artworks.
Head over to the Feral bandcamp store here or listen via the player below.

2013 Wrap Up

As 2013 draws to a close we thought it timely to review the year that was for all things Feral.

2013 started off slowly with only one release in the first half of the year, 0point1’s (formerly 0.1) epic long-form piece The Dance of Mechanical Birds.
The piece beautifully encapsulates 0point1’s sound and provided a great introduction to his unique style. He will certainly be an artist to watch next year.

After a quiet start the second half of 2013 was extremely busy with 4 releases from August onwards.
First up we launched the Seasons EP series, a set of 4 EPs inspired by the seasons and released over a 12 month period. The series kicked off with the Winter EP which saw Kane Ikin, Tuff Sherm, Scissor Lock and Panoptique Electrical each interpret Winter with an exclusive piece. The results were far beyond our expectations and set the bar high for the remaining instalments.

Up next Melbourne-based artist Nimble Animal (aka Dom Stephens) gave us the exquisite Bleak Moments EP, which saw Dom pushing the sonic experiments of his previous work into new and exciting dimensions. There are nods to electronic music pioneers like Tangerine Dream and Jürgen Müller which are counter-balanced with an indie-pop sensibility, resulting in a unique and rewarding listening experience.

November saw the second instalment in the Seasons series, the Spring EP. The artists on the Spring EP certainly rose to the challenge with Tim Shiel, Pimmon, Nakagin and Nimble Animal all providing contributions which were as beautiful and as varied as the season itself.

Our final release for the year came in the form of Strain of Origin III, the latest in our annual compilation series. We once again teamed up with Brisbane label LoFly and together enlisted a slew of amazing local artists to take part. The results were nothing short of amazing and are a true testament to the wealth of talent currently active in the Australian underground music scene.

We will certainly look to capitalise on the momentum gained over the past few months with some amazing releases already lined up for 2014; including the full-length debut from 0point1, a new EP from Canberra-based outfit Spartak, the long-awaited sophomore album from AFXJIM, the conclusion of the Seasons series with the Summer and Autumn EPs, Strain of Origin IV and some other exciting projects which will be unveiled in the new year.

We would like to thank everyone who supported us in 2013 and can’t wait to share plenty more great music with you all in 2014.

Finally as a holiday treat, and in preparation for a new release in 2014 the wonderful AFXJIM has just released Xmathis, a Christmas-themed EP featuring lost tracks and cover songs collected over the years.

Strain of Origin III now available

Feral Media and LoFly Recordings are proud to present the third edition in our annual Strain of Origin compilation series.
The labels once again act as curators enlisting a host of amazing local artists including: Aoi, Nakagin, The Townhouses, Bon Chat, Bon Rat, Children of the Wave, Scissor Lock, Spartak, Trjaeu, Anomie, Vacant Lake, Inch Time, ¹fm¹, Reuben Ingall, 0point1 and Sadglint, with Feral/LoFly label artists ReSTReAM, aheadphonehome & Underlapper making a return appearance.

The concept remains the same with each artist submitting a track to be remixed and in turn receiving a track from which to create their contribution for the release and once again the results are nothing short of amazing.

Strain of Origin III is another uncompromising entry in the series, providing a comprehensive snapshot of both new and established Australian artists.
With the undeniable musical talent showcased on this years effort, we can’t wait to continue the series in 2014.

As always the compilation is free to download so head to the Feral bandcamp site here to grab your self a copy, or listen via the player below. While you’re at it check out the original Strain of Origin and Strain of Origin II

Our first release for 2013 comes from Melbourne artist 0.1 with his 17 minute epic The Dance of Mechanical Birds.

The piece is a great introduction to 0.1’s unique sound which was hinted at on his contribution to the Feral Media 10 year anniversary compilation released late last year.

The release is available digitally and also as a limited edition CD-R with hand painted artwork by 0.1
