After some unforeseen delays we are extremely excited to finally share the fifth instalment in our ongoing Strain of Origin compilation series.
As eclectic as ever, the latest instalment pairs forward-thinking Australian artists including Tim Shiel, Dylan Michél, Wabz, WORNG, Setec, and Mannheim Rocket, amongst others, asking them to remix each other’s work with no set rules or guidelines.
The resulting pieces are as compelling and varied as the artists themselves, once again showcasing the broad talent operating in the contemporary Australian music scene.
As with previous compilations, Strain of Origin V is available as a free download from the Feral Media bandcamp site here; or can be streamed via the player below.
Thank you to all of the amazing artists who took part in the compilation, we are extremely grateful for your contributions.
The latest in our ongoing Virtual Mixtape series with whothehell.net comes from Sydney trio Making whose album Highlife was one of the highlights of 2015.
Full of discordant guitar, razor sharp bass lines and complex rhythms, the band will certainly appeal to fans of contemporaries My Disco and the now sadly defunct Ohana.
In the spirit of the Virtual Mixtape series Making explore the weird and wonderful world of avant-rap royalty Kool Keith. Of particular note is the opening video ‘98 Year Old Refrigerator’ which will no doubt polarise those uninitiated with Keith’s work.

We are extremely excited to present Microclimates, the latest release from Canberra artist Reuben Ingall.
We have been big fans of Reuben’s music since his stunning 2012 release Dealt and we are very proud to share this latest effort.
Ingall’s music is a mix of lonely pop and glitchy, psychedelic soundscapes created by processing guitar, voice and other sources through an array of home-made software patches.
The resulting songs are at once intimate and sincere but also cloaked with a sense of detachment, as if the technology is interfering with the music, like a lost transmission floating in the ether.
It is music for a forlorn future from a unique and talented artist.
Microclimates is available digitally and also as a limited edition CD with custom UV-printed sleeves featuring the stunning cover illustration from Robbie Karmel (pictured below).

We are proud to present Splintered Time, the latest release from Brisbane artist Perfume Garden aka Errol Hoffman.
Splintered Time finds Hoffman continue his experiments into synth-heavy post-punk drawing on past influences such as Joy Division, Cocteau Twins and the film scores of Vangelis, to modern boundary-pushing artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never and Tim Hecker.
Composed using his extensive collection of old Casio keyboards, Hoffman counterbalances the ominous, subterranean drones and primitive drum machine beats with icy melodies that pierce through the sludgy depths with glistening clarity.
The wonderful peeps at whothehell.net premiered the album earlier this week calling it “the perfect soundtrack to enjoying your own post-apocalyptic fantasy on these long mid-winter nights”.

It’s been a long time between drinks for Clairaudience; started in 2005 by Feral Media founder Danny Jumpertz and his wife Caroline the band released an instrumental improv debut album in 2007 as part of the POW WOW new music series.
In 2013, once core members Danny and Caroline had emigrated to the USA, the band found new members in Franzi Szymkowiak, Kerrii Cavanagh and Heidi Patalano, and started gigging around New York’s Lower East Side, East Village and Brooklyn.
Sun Damage is the band’s first release with the current line up and is a summery mix of power pop soulfulness, gaffer taped together by the DIY aesthetic that drives the band. The release also marks the first results of an ongoing collaboration with producer Abe Seiferth (Yeasayer, Eleanor Friedberger).
Featuring stunning artwork by former band member Martin Kirkwood, Sun Damage is available digitally and also as a limited edition cassette via the Feral Media bandcamp store here.
The latest instalment in our ongoing Virtual Mixtape series with whothehell.net comes from Sydney musician Marcus Whale (Collarbones/Black Vanilla).
Marcus selected Scott Walker as the theme for his mixtape guiding us through his intriguing solo career, from the lush orchestral ballads of the late 60’s, through to the eccentric explorations of his more recent work.
