2013 Wrap Up

2013

As 2013 draws to a close we thought it timely to review the year that was for all things Feral.

2013 started off slowly with only one release in the first half of the year, 0point1’s (formerly 0.1) epic long-form piece The Dance of Mechanical Birds.
The piece beautifully encapsulates 0point1’s sound and provided a great introduction to his unique style. He will certainly be an artist to watch next year.

After a quiet start the second half of 2013 was extremely busy with 4 releases from August onwards.
First up we launched the Seasons EP series, a set of 4 EPs inspired by the seasons and released over a 12 month period. The series kicked off with the Winter EP which saw Kane Ikin, Tuff Sherm, Scissor Lock and Panoptique Electrical each interpret Winter with an exclusive piece. The results were far beyond our expectations and set the bar high for the remaining instalments.

Up next Melbourne-based artist Nimble Animal (aka Dom Stephens) gave us the exquisite Bleak Moments EP, which saw Dom pushing the sonic experiments of his previous work into new and exciting dimensions. There are nods to electronic music pioneers like Tangerine Dream and Jürgen Müller which are counter-balanced with an indie-pop sensibility, resulting in a unique and rewarding listening experience.

November saw the second instalment in the Seasons series, the Spring EP. The artists on the Spring EP certainly rose to the challenge with Tim Shiel, Pimmon, Nakagin and Nimble Animal all providing contributions which were as beautiful and as varied as the season itself.

Our final release for the year came in the form of Strain of Origin III, the latest in our annual compilation series. We once again teamed up with Brisbane label LoFly and together enlisted a slew of amazing local artists to take part. The results were nothing short of amazing and are a true testament to the wealth of talent currently active in the Australian underground music scene.

We will certainly look to capitalise on the momentum gained over the past few months with some amazing releases already lined up for 2014; including the full-length debut from 0point1, a new EP from Canberra-based outfit Spartak, the long-awaited sophomore album from AFXJIM, the conclusion of the Seasons series with the Summer and Autumn EPs, Strain of Origin IV and some other exciting projects which will be unveiled in the new year.

We would like to thank everyone who supported us in 2013 and can’t wait to share plenty more great music with you all in 2014.

Finally as a holiday treat, and in preparation for a new release in 2014 the wonderful AFXJIM has just released Xmathis, a Christmas-themed EP featuring lost tracks and cover songs collected over the years.
….Enjoy!

Seasons Series continues with Spring EP

Seasons - Spring art

Feral Media continue the Seasons EP series with the highly anticipated second instalment, the Spring EP. Once again the artists involved use the respective season as the inspiration for an exclusive new piece.

The EP opens with a track from Tim Shiel, who after recently retiring his Faux Pas moniker offers up something decidedly different with General Practice; a shimmering piece of pastoral folktronica replete with insect-like pulses and hazy acoustic guitar. Pimmon maintains the mood on Ytterbium, which opens with skittering percussion and droning brass pads which slowly dissolve into a warm and alluring closing passage.
Nakagin delivers a breezy electronic number with Bloom, which sees the producer basking in the pleasantly down-tempo surrounds that he has become synonymous with; whilst Nimble Animal sets a darker tone, rounding out the EP with his track Time Scraper; full of gurgling digital fuzz, stop-start rhythms and slightly menacing prose.

The Spring EP continues the fine form established on the first instalment, the Winter EP. And we are certain that the final two instalments will also deliver, rounding out what has already been an amazing series.
Stay tuned for the Summer EP, set for release early 2014 which will feature exclusive contributions from Bon Chat, Bon Rat, The Townhouses, Friendships and Tim Fitz.

For now bask in the beauty of the Spring EP which you can download over at the Feral bandcamp store, or listen via the player below.

Nimble Animal releases Bleak Moments

Bleak Moments

Feral Media are thrilled to announce the release of Bleak Moments, the stunning new EP from Nimble Animal aka Dom Stephens (Outerwaves/Oh Ye Denver Birds).

Bleak Moments finds Dom at the top of his game continuing the rich sonic experiments of his debut album Dumb Dirge, and underpinning them with an indie-pop sensibility resulting in a more immediate and personal release.
The EP takes cues from early electronic artists such as Tangerine Dream and Jürgen Müller, transforming them into modern pop music ventures with Dom’s warmly inviting production and catchy vocal melodies.

Bleak Moments is a welcome addition to the Feral Media catalogue, epitomising the labels ethos in promoting interesting and eclectic local music.

Seasons EP Series

Seasons square

We are thrilled to announce the Seasons EP series, a 4 part series of releases inspired by the seasons.
Each EP will feature 4 artists, all of whom will contribute an exclusive piece with the respective season acting as the theme of each release.
The artwork for the series (as pictured above) has been designed by long-time Feral Media collaborators Sopp Collective, who have taken the theme and created a cohesive collection of covers featuring objects and shapes typically associated with each season.

First up we have the Winter EP which features a stellar cast of local artists, with contributions from Kane Ikin, Tuff Sherm (aka Dro Carey), Panoptique Electrical and Scissor Lock.

The second instalment in the series (set for release in October) is the Spring EP which will feature contributions from Nakagin, Pimmon, Tim Shiel (formerly Faux Pas) and Nimble Animal.
Artists for the final two instalments will be announced over the coming months and without giving too much away it is suffice to say they will maintain the high level of quality established in the first two releases.

For now let us revel in the majesty that is the Winter EP. Head over to the Feral bandcamp store here to grab a copy, or listen via the player below.

A huge thanks to all the artists involved, you’ve really set the bar for the series!

Forthcoming on Feral Media

Nimble-Animal-Forest-4

After a seemingly quiet start to the year, the second half of 2013 is going to be a cracker with a number of amazing albums set for release over the coming months.

First up prolific Brisbane-born artist Dom Stephens (Pictured above) will release a new album under his Nimble Animal guise entitled Bleak Moments.
The new album sees Dom continuing with the rich sound experiments of his debut Dumb Dirge, which is countered by an indie-pop sensibility resulting in a more personal and rewarding effort.
Stay tuned for more news from Nimble Animal and in the meantime familiarise yourself with his fantastic debut album Dumb Dirge, released via Fallopian Tunes last year.

We are also stoked to announce a new album from Feral artist AFXJIM (aka multi-instrumentalist Travis Baird) which is the highly anticipated follow-up to his 2009 debut Blackout Music. Despite the gap between albums Travis has kept himself busy creating soundtracks for video installations, carrying out guitar duties for the likes of Melodie Nelson, Founder & Wibes and of course writing and recording his sophomore release.
To whet your appetite check out the recent Feral Media label mix created for music website A Closer Listen here, which opens with the first preview taken from the new album.

On top of this we have the third instalment in the highly acclaimed Strain of Origin series (check out the first comp here and the second comp here), as well as an extremely exciting soon-to-be-announced EP series featuring a slew of amazing local artists.

Stay tuned for more information on all of these releases over the coming weeks and months. We can’t wait to share them all with you!

Label mix for A Closer Listen

scratching-the-surface

Recently we were asked to submit a label mix for experimental music website A Closer Listen’s ongoing mix series curated by guest contributors.

The mix entitled Scratching the Surface acts as a snapshot of the underground Australian music scene as we see it, with tracks from recent Feral Media releases alongside tracks from artists we enjoy such as Making, Reuben Ingall, Anonymeye, Option Command and Cold House.

The mix also includes tracks from new label signees 0.1 and Nimble Animal (both of whom have upcoming releases slated for 2013), as well as two upfront exclusives that bookend the mix. The first exclusive (which opens the mix) comes from AFXJIM with an amazing track taken from his forthcoming album. The second exlcusive (which concludes the mix) comes in the form of a remix of Sydney producer Loopsnake by Feral act Underlapper.

Many thanks to A Closer Listen for giving us the opportunity and thanks to all of the amazing music being made in Australia at the moment, a small fragment of which is included here.

Listen to the mix on mixcloud here and check out the full tracklisting plus a mini-interview on the A Closer Listen website here.
