Feral Media is pleased to announce the release of ‘The Pomegranate EP’ from TEXTILE AUDIO – the solo project for operatic mezzo soprano and electronic musician Eve Klein.

Working with scores, field recordings, and operatic-pop vocals, Textile Audio weaves rich melodic soundscapes and textures that are unashamedly romantic.

Her debut EP for Feral Media includes material from her forthcoming ‘electronica opera’, titled “The Pomegranate Cycle”. Fusing opera, ambient electronica and post-classical composition, the work is loosely based around the myth of Persephone; and is premiering at the Brisbane Festival as part of ‘Under The Radar’.

The EP also includes a new remix by Sydney’s GENTLEFORCE, whose recent contribution to Feral Media’s POWWOW series (‘Sacred Spaces’) translated into an upcoming appearance on a compilation CD from the renowned magazine, The Wire.

The EP is available on both digital and limited CD formats, with cover artwork by Textile Audio. Purchase now at feralmedia.bandcamp.com.

And we’re delighted to see Feral Media’s VORAD FILS grabbing the No.2 spot ahead of critically lauded albums by other Australia artists PVT (aka PIVOT) and PARADES. Here’s what they had to say:

“This is solo project of John Hassell from Seekae. I love Seekae, and a lot of the stuff I love about Seekae is retained here, yet Hassell feels joyously free from the icy aesthetic that defines his main band’s music. As a result, we get tracks like ‘Lioness,’ which are no less technically impressive but far warmer and inviting. It’s the most immediate thing on there, but not even the best. Delve deeper if you enjoy.”

It’s been three years since their 2007 Feral Media album ‘Red Spring’, but Sydney’s UNDERLAPPER have been far from quiet. Last year’s ‘Red Spring Remixes’ collection was released (featuring reversions from FAUX PAS, ANONYMEYE, BROKEN CHIP, GENTLEFORCE and more), as the band simultaneously worked on their third album, ‘Softly Harboured’, due for release later in 2010. As a precursor to the release, UNDERLAPPER have also completed a remix for fellow Sydneysiders PARADES, which you can stream in the player below.

‘Softly Harboured’ sees UNDERLAPPER again delving into new musical territories, capturing the sound of the band’s live performances. The influences are still varied, yet the songs are more cohesive and show a progression from their previous work. Vocals and live drumming play a more integral part in the music and the sound is further expanded with cello contributions by Peter Hollo, and vocal contributions by members of Parades, Kaya and a return performance by Holly McKellar.

Vorad Fils gives Sydney producer John Hassell (Seekae) the chance to explore the boundaries of sound and melody, and cross-pollinate rhythmic sensibility with the freedom of ambience. The eclectic mix of influences includes early 90s video games, 18th century gothic novels, as well as the music of Spinform, Chris Clark and Glenn Gould.

“I have been producing electronic music for more than four years now and I feel this project shows tremendous growth since I began, with still so much room to grow,’’ Hassell says. “I’ve been fascinated with the limitless potential of compositional software and its ability to alter sound so dramatically, often to the point where it is indistinguishable from its original form.” John Hassell – Vorad Fils

“One of the main concerns I had with this project was that I would hold back on ideas I felt were too risky. Luckily, I was able to express myself without restricting songs to a certain length or structure, and I take confidence in saying it is my most honest work to date.”

The Warmest Static is Hassell’s debut album as Vorad Fils and a fitting final instalment in Feral Media’s POWWOW new music series.
